Most Common Types of Lung Disease

In the U.S. alone, there are various types of lung diseases that can lead to chronic respiratory conditions. It is widely believed that smoking is the leading cause of these conditions, while others can be passed down. Other environmental factors can also contribute to the development of these conditions.

Asthma

About 25 million people in the U.S. suffer from asthma. Individuals with a family history of asthma or other respiratory conditions are more prone to developing this condition. Asthma is a chronic inflammation that attacks the lungs and causes them to become blocked by mucus.

Although the severity of asthma varies depending on the individual, most people with this condition take daily preventive medication and utilize an inhaler to support their lifestyle.

Lung Cancer

As the third most common type of cancer in the U.S., lung cancer is known to affect over 200,000 individuals. It can develop as either small or non-small-cell lung cancer. One of the most common factors that can lead to this type of cancer is exposure to cigarette smoke. Different types of lung cancer can develop and appear without any symptoms. When it does appear, the symptoms can include a cough that lingers in the throat or chest, fatigue, and weight loss.

Cystic Fibrosis

Around 35,000 people in the U.S. have cystic fibrosis, which is a genetic condition that causes thick mucus to accumulate in the body. It can also cause digestive and breathing problems. Although the disease can affect different organs, it can manifest into specific problems such as blocked mucus in the lungs. The first signs of cystic fibrosis are usually detected early in life, as newborns in the U.S. are screened for the condition. If a diagnosis is not made at birth, then symptoms developed in childhood can lead to a later diagnosis.

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)

COPD is a type of respiratory disease that is classified into two main categories: chronic bronchitis and emphysema. When the tiny air sacs in the lungs become damaged or less elastic, it can lead to the development of emphysema. Chronic bronchitis is caused by the inflammation and irritation of the lining of the tubes that run through the lungs. It can also make it hard to breathe and lead to an overproduction of mucus.

In the U.S., around 15 million individuals have been diagnosed with COPD. Approximately 12 million additional people are believed to have the condition but have not been diagnosed. COPD is regarded as the fourth leading cause of death in the U.S.
